A sanctuary beneath the pilgrim town

Monte Sant’Angelo’s most important destination lies beneath its streets. The descent into the grotto makes a striking transition from the light and activity of the town to a place of worship within the mountain. Your guide introduces the sanctuary before you enter, leaving room for silence where visitors are asked to pray.

According to the sanctuary’s tradition, the grotto is associated with appearances of St Michael and is known as the Celestial Basilica. We explain these traditions within their Catholic setting. The visit also distinguishes the sanctuary’s devotional history from the surviving architecture that pilgrims encounter today.

The sanctuary forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage property of the Longobards in Italy. Its importance reaches beyond one town: it helped shape the spread of devotion to St Michael across Europe. The surrounding lanes make that long history easier to imagine as you walk between the sanctuary and the historic centre.

The journey moves from obedience at Monte Sant’Angelo to surrender with Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, then to an introduction to Luisa Piccarreta’s life and spirituality in Corato.

Proposed private departures and price

Suggested time: 09:00–11:30, Monday to Friday, by request. Please request your preferred date at least 14 days ahead so guiding and sanctuary arrangements can be checked. The sequence is adjusted around Mass and other celebrations; the proposed timetable is not a confirmed departure.

Suggested private price: €225 for up to four guests, plus €25 for each additional guest, with a proposed maximum of eight. The price proposal covers the guided walking visit and prayer pauses. Transport, parking, meals, accommodation, personal donations and optional museum admission are separate. Your final quotation confirms the arrangements.

Planning your visit

Meet outside the sanctuary’s main entrance in the upper forecourt on Via Reale Basilica, 15 minutes before the confirmed start. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for a church. The route includes steps, slopes and uneven surfaces; tell us about mobility needs before confirming so the accessible route can be checked.

Does the St Michael’s Cave tour include Mass?

The tour includes time for personal prayer. Mass and confession follow the sanctuary’s own timetable and are not reserved services within the tour. If attending Mass is a priority, the visit can be planned around a suitable celebration once the date is known.

Are the museums and castle included?

The core route focuses on the sanctuary, grotto and surrounding pilgrim town. The museums and castle are not included. An extended visit can be considered separately if you would like more time for the town’s art and history.

Can this be combined with Padre Pio?
