Santa Croce: One of Rome’s 7 Pilgrim Churches

The Holy Cross Santa Croce Pilgrim Church Tour visits the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, one of the traditional 7 Pilgrim Churches of Rome. The route was given its enduring form in the sixteenth century by St Philip Neri, who led pilgrims across Rome in prayer, penance and fellowship.

This focused one-hour Catholic tour explores the basilica’s connection with St Helena, the relics associated with the Passion of Christ and Santa Croce’s place within Rome’s ancient pilgrimage tradition. St Helena and the Basilica of the Holy Cross

Santa Croce developed from part of the imperial Sessorian palace complex associated with St Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine. Christian tradition holds that Helena brought relics of the Passion from Jerusalem to Rome, and the ancient hall was transformed into a basilica to preserve and venerate them.

The title in Gerusalemme recalls the basilica’s special relationship with Jerusalem. Soil traditionally said to have been brought from the Holy Land was placed at the site, allowing Roman pilgrims to approach the mystery of Christ’s Passion without leaving the city.

Over the centuries Santa Croce became an important destination for penitential pilgrimage, particularly during Lent and Holy Week. Its inclusion in St Philip Neri’s Seven Churches route placed it within a devotional journey connecting the four Major Basilicas with the tombs of the martyrs and the relics of Christ’s Passion.

The Relics of Christ’s Passion

Your Catholic guide will introduce the history of the basilica outside before leading you through the church to the chapel of St Helena and the Chapel of the Holy Relics. The tour considers the relics not merely as historical objects, but within salvation history: signs that direct the pilgrim towards the Incarnation, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Among the objects traditionally venerated at Santa Croce are:

• fragments of the True Cross;
• part of the Titulus Crucis, the inscription placed above Christ on the Cross;
• a Holy Nail associated with the Crucifixion;
• thorns associated with the Crown of Thorns;
• a relic traditionally identified as the finger of St Thomas the Apostle; and
• a life-size photographic reproduction of the Shroud of Turin.

Time is allowed for quiet prayer and veneration. Your guide will then help place the Passion within the wider story of mankind’s Fall and Redemption, drawing out its meaning for the pilgrim’s own spiritual life.

Santa Croce on the Via Crucis Route
