Explore St Peter’s Basilica with a Catholic Guide

The St Peter’s Basilica Catholic Tour is a 1.5–2-hour guided pilgrimage through the heart of the Catholic Church. Rather than combining the basilica with the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, this tour gives St Peter’s the time and attention it deserves—exploring its apostolic history, sacred art, architecture and Catholic meaning.

From St Peter’s Martyrdom to the Vatican Basilica

Your guide begins with the martyrdom and burial of St Peter, the Apostle to whom Christ entrusted the keys of the Kingdom. You will learn how the first Constantinian basilica was built over his burial place in the fourth century and how it was eventually replaced by the present church.

In St Peter’s Square, the ancient Egyptian obelisk recalls the site of the Apostle’s martyrdom. Inside the basilica, the tomb of St Peter lies beneath the papal altar and Bernini’s great bronze baldachin.

Michelangelo, Bernini and the Art of the Catholic Church

St Peter’s brings together some of the greatest achievements of Renaissance and Baroque art. Your Catholic guide interprets Michelangelo’s Pietà and dome, Maderno’s vast nave and façade, and Bernini’s baldachin, Cathedra Petri and monumental design for St Peter’s Square.

These works are not merely decoration. Their imagery expresses Catholic teaching on sacrifice, the Eucharist, the papacy, the communion of saints and the triumph of the Church.

Some Relics of Christ’s Passion and the Tomb of St Peter

St Peter’s is associated with some relics of Christ’s Passion, specifically the Holy Lance and the Veil of Veronica, which are housed within the great piers surrounding the papal altar. They are not ordinarily displayed at close range, but your guide explains their history and their place within the basilica. Pilgrims wishing to encounter more of Rome’s traditions concerning the relics of the Nativity and Passion can explore our Via Crucis – Relics of Christ Tour.

The Holy Door and Jubilee 2033

St Peter’s contains one of the Holy Doors of Rome’s four Major Basilicas. The door is now closed following the Jubilee Year of 2025, but remains visible to visitors. It is expected to reopen for the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033.

A Standalone Tour of St Peter’s Basilica

This tour covers the basilica itself and does not include the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel or dome climb. After the guided visit, travellers may arrange a dome visit independently, subject to opening conditions and queues.

Paul was the best guide! If you want to experience St. Peter’s Basilica from an authentically Catholic perspective, this was the best experience! I will be recommending to everyone I know visiting Rome.

Tom was a wealth of information, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour, as Catholics we appreciated all of the historical details.

We had actually booked a Vatican Museums tour with another company that included a final tour of St Peters but we were very disappointed with the guide who seemed anti-Catholic to us. We therefore decided to book a separate tour through Crucis Tours and we are so glad we did. This time our guide was superb – thoroughly religious and knew his history too. For those wanting to know more about St Peters, use this company and not any of the others hawking their wares on the street! God bless you!
