Florence Day Tour for Catholic Pilgrims

The Florence Day Tour is a full-day journey through the sacred art, architecture and Catholic history of Renaissance Florence. With an expert Catholic guide, you will explore the Duomo complex—Florence Cathedral, the Baptistery of San Giovanni and the Opera del Duomo Museum—before crossing the historic centre to the Franciscan Basilica of Santa Croce.

The guided visits total approximately five hours, with a break for lunch between the Duomo complex and Santa Croce. Beginning at 10:30am, the complete day normally finishes at around 5:30pm. Entrance tickets and required reservation vouchers are included.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

Your tour begins in Piazza del Duomo beside the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the spiritual heart of Florence. Begun in 1296, the cathedral brought together generations of architects and artists before Filippo Brunelleschi completed its revolutionary dome. Pope Eugene IV consecrated the cathedral in 1436.

Inside, your guide will explain how the building expresses the religious and civic identity of Florence. Look up towards the vast Last Judgement begun by Giorgio Vasari and completed by Federico Zuccari beneath Brunelleschi’s dome, and discover the cathedral’s stained glass, liturgical spaces and relationship with the earlier church of Santa Reparata beneath it.

This is not simply an architectural visit. The cathedral remains an active place of Catholic worship, and the tour places its engineering and artistic achievement within the faith for which it was built.

The Baptistery of San Giovanni

Opposite the cathedral stands the octagonal Baptistery of San Giovanni, the ancient religious and civic centre of Florence. Consecrated in 1059, it became the place where generations of Florentines—including Dante—entered the Catholic Church through Baptism.

Your guide will interpret its white and green marble geometry, the biblical programme of its bronze doors and its dedication to St John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence. The celebrated eastern doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti became known as the Gates of Paradise; the originals are now protected inside the Opera del Duomo Museum.

Please note: the Baptistery’s medieval vault mosaics are undergoing a major restoration scheduled through 2028 and are not presently visible in their entirety.

Opera del Duomo Museum: Sacred Art in Its Original Setting

The Opera del Duomo Museum preserves original sculpture and liturgical art created for the Cathedral, Baptistery and Giotto’s Bell Tower. Displayed beside a reconstruction of the cathedral’s medieval façade, these works can be understood in the architectural and theological settings for which they were made.

• Michelangelo’s Florentine Pietà—a powerful meditation on the body of Christ that the artist intended for his own funerary monument.
• Donatello’s Penitent Magdalene—a stark wooden figure expressing repentance, suffering and spiritual transformation.
• Ghiberti’s original Gates of Paradise—ten monumental Old Testament panels whose perspective and relief helped define early Renaissance art.

Your guide will show how innovation in sculpture, perspective and architecture served sacred teaching and devotion rather than existing apart from it.

Lunch and a Walk Through Historic Florence

After the Duomo complex, there is time for lunch before the tour continues on foot through Florence’s historic centre. The walk provides a chance to see how churches, guilds, civic institutions and public squares formed a city in which religious life and artistic patronage were deeply connected.

Lunch is not included, allowing you to choose according to your preferences and dietary needs.

Basilica of Santa Croce: Franciscan Florence

The final guided visit is the Basilica of Santa Croce, the principal Franciscan church of Florence. Here the spirituality of St Francis meets some of the city’s greatest artistic and intellectual achievements.

Inside, discover Giotto’s frescoes in the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels, with scenes from the lives of St Francis, St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist. Your guide will also introduce the Pazzi Chapel, traditionally associated with Brunelleschi, and explain the basilica’s long relationship with Florence’s leading families and confraternities.

Santa Croce is also known for the tombs and memorials of prominent Italians, including Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Their presence gave the church its familiar description as the Temple of Italian Glories, but its deepest identity remains that of a living Franciscan basilica.
