4 Major Basilicas Tour Rome in One Day

The Crucis 4 Major Basilicas Tour Rome is a private Catholic pilgrimage to the four highest-ranking basilicas of Rome: St Peter’s Basilica, St Paul Outside the Walls, St John Lateran and St Mary Major. Travel between the basilicas by private air-conditioned vehicle with a knowledgeable Catholic guide, making it possible to experience all four sacred churches in approximately five hours. Designed for private groups of up to seven pilgrims, this tour combines efficient transport with Catholic history, sacred art and time to venerate some of Rome’s most important relics. It is ideal for visitors who have only one day available but do not want to miss the spiritual meaning of the Major Basilicas.

Why Are Rome’s Four Major Basilicas Important?

A Major Basilica is a church of the highest rank. The four Major Basilicas are all in Rome and each has a papal altar and a Holy Door. St John Lateran holds first place because it is the Cathedral of Rome and the episcopal seat of the Pope as Bishop of Rome. It bears the title Mother and Head of all the churches in the city and the world. The Holy Doors opened for the Ordinary Jubilee of 2025 and have since closed. They are expected to open again for the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033. Even when the doors are closed, your guide will explain their history, symbolism and place in the Catholic tradition of pilgrimage.

St Peter’s Basilica

Begin at the heart of the Vatican with an in-depth visit to St Peter’s Basilica. See Michelangelo’s Pietà, Bernini’s great baldachin and the papal altar above the tomb of St Peter. Your guide will explain how the present basilica was built over the ancient Christian burial place associated with the Prince of the Apostles and why St Peter’s became the most famous Catholic church in the world.

St Paul Outside the Walls

Private transport takes you across Rome to the monumental Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls. Beneath the papal altar is the ancient sarcophagus venerated as the tomb of St Paul the Apostle. The basilica also preserves a chain traditionally associated with his Roman imprisonment. Explore the magnificent mosaics, the portraits of the popes and the peaceful monastic setting surrounding one of Rome’s most important apostolic shrines.

St John Lateran: Cathedral of Rome

The pilgrimage continues to the Archbasilica of St John Lateran, the Cathedral of Rome and the oldest of the four Major Basilicas. Discover its unique rank within the Catholic Church, its history as the papal cathedral and the monumental statues of the Apostles. Above the papal altar are reliquaries traditionally said to contain the heads of St Peter and St Paul.

St Mary Major

Finish at the glorious Basilica of St Mary Major, renowned for its ancient mosaics, golden ceiling and profound connection with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Venerate the relics of the Holy Crib and see the beloved icon of Our Lady painted by St Luke. The basilica’s beauty and Marian devotion provide a fitting conclusion to the day’s pilgrimage.

My wife Sara and I were treated to a wonderful tour by Wen who studies theology. Her knowledge of the Catholic faith was immense and it showed. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Wen as she answered all of our questions and made the tour very inspirational for us. We felt very immersed and grateful for the opportunity to take part in such a wonderful faith journey.

Our 4 Major Basilicas tour was truly one of the highlights of our trip. Each basilica was breathtaking in its own way, filled with beauty, history, and deep spiritual meaning. What made the experience especially memorable was our incredible tour guide, Wen.

Wen was exceptionally knowledgeable, not just about the history and architecture, but about the Catholic faith itself. She brought each basilica to life by explaining the meaning behind the symbols, artwork, and traditions we encountered. Her insights helped us see far beyond what we would have noticed on our own. Wen brought our attention to mosaics, statues, and details and explained their significance.

Her passion and depth of understanding added so much richness to the tour. It felt less like a standard tour and more like a meaningful journey through the heart of our faith. We came away with a deeper appreciation for the Church’s history and the beauty of its traditions.

We would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting, especially if you want a tour more focused on your Catholic faith. If you are lucky enough to have Wen as your guide, she will make an already amazing experience truly unforgettable.

This review is long over due. My husband and kids took a Crucis tour last year while visiting Rome. Our tour guide Tom gave us the best history lesson while touring all 4 major Basilicas. One of my teens said afterwards that he learned more from Tom in 4 hours then he learns in a whole year at school.

We wanted to see all of the 4 Major basilicas but because they’re spread out around the city, it was great to be able to do them all in one day with private transport between them. The Basilicas were truly awe-inspiring and each with their own particular character that I wasnt expecting. Our guide was utterly amazing. I couldn’t believe how much information he knew and his entertaining style made this long tour an absolute delight. I cant recommend this tour more highly.
