If you have only one free day, begin with Assisi or Florence. Choose by the purpose of the visit: neither needs to become a race through every attraction. If prayer and a change of daily rhythm are your priorities, give Medjugorje its own place in your wider itinerary.
Rome to Assisi: plan beyond the railway station
Assisi offers a natural continuation of a Catholic visit to Rome. The Basilica of St Francis and the Basilica of St Clare give the day a clear spiritual focus, while the streets between them reveal the town in which Franciscan history took shape. A guided afternoon can leave the morning available for travel and lunch.
Check the actual train rather than assuming every journey takes two hours. In its September 2026 travel information for Assisi, Trenitalia gives a Rome departure at 07:43 reaching Assisi at 10:28: a 2-hour-45-minute example, not a permanent timetable. Some journeys require changes; compare the complete itinerary in the booking results.
The station is down in Santa Maria degli Angeli, away from the historic hill town. Trenitalia’s Assisi Link connects the station forecourt with the centre by bus; selecting “Assisi Centro” searches for the combined train-and-bus journey. Leave time between arrival and meeting your guide.
A workable Assisi day
Travel in the morning, reach the agreed meeting area and have lunch before an afternoon visit. The St Francis of Assisi Pilgrim Tour is the more manageable starting point for many visitors coming from Rome. Confirm its departure, finish and return connection before buying tickets.

Do not add the Eremo delle Carceri as an effortless extra between trains: the official Assisi visitor information says it has no public-transport connection. Agree any additional transport and allow for slopes, steps and a realistic return to the station.
Rome to Florence: a full day of Catholic sacred art
Florence is especially practical when you want a contrasting experience without moving hotels. Italo’s Rome–Florence route information gives a fastest journey of about 1 hour 25 minutes to Firenze Santa Maria Novella. Think of that as time on the train: add the journey from your Rome accommodation, arrival at the station and the walk to the meeting point.
A Catholic visit to Florence asks what its buildings and artworks were created to express. Baptism, repentance, the Passion and Franciscan spirituality provide a thread through places that can otherwise feel like separate masterpieces. Choose a coherent group of visits and keep room for lunch and questions.
Build the day around the guided visits
The Crucis Florence Day Tour links the Cathedral, Baptistery, Opera del Duomo Museum and Santa Croce. Its published programme begins at 10:30 and finishes around 17:30, including a lunch break. Confirm the current booking details, then choose a train arriving comfortably before the start and a return allowing travel back from Santa Croce.
Check what your booking includes before buying separate monument passes. Avoid squeezing a dome climb or another major museum into an already full guided day. At present, the Duomo’s official visitor guidance says the Baptistery’s vault mosaics are obscured by restoration; do not base your expectations on older photographs.
Religious services and holiday opening can change access. Santa Croce’s visitor information distinguishes ordinary opening from Sundays and religious holidays. If attending Mass is essential to your day, arrange time for worship separately from the sightseeing timetable.
Rome to Medjugorje: use the Mostar flight for a short break
The direct flight makes a Medjugorje stay an appealing extension to Rome. However, it serves Mostar Airport, not Medjugorje itself, and the published service is seasonal.
SkyAlps’ summer 2026 timetable lists Rome Fiumicino–Mostar in both directions on Mondays and Fridays. The Friday programme runs 22 May–2 October 2026; Mondays run 25 May–5 October 2026. Scheduled flying time is 1 hour 25 minutes outbound and 1 hour 15 minutes back. Check the airline’s bookable dates; these details do not establish a year-round service.
SkyAlps describes Medjugorje as approximately 30 minutes from Mostar Airport. That is an approximate road journey, excluding arrival formalities, luggage collection and any wait for your driver. Arrange collection in advance and provide the flight details and accommodation address.
Three nights or four?
Where both flights operate and seats are available, Friday–Monday offers three nights; Monday–Friday offers four. These are possible travel patterns, not guaranteed packages. Check both legs together, particularly around the season’s final week.

Include travel to the departure station or airport, baggage where charged, local transfers, meals, guiding, separately purchased admissions and overnight stays.
